Window Seals: The Key to Draught-Proofing Your Home
Do you feel a chill in your home even though you have the heating turned up? Are your energy bills sky-high? Chances are, you have draughts. Draughts can enter your home through any type of opening around your home. Windows & doors are generally the biggest culprits for a draughty house.
The variety of window styles and designs is extensive, with the most common being sash, sliding, and wind out. The material used for their construction can range from timber, aluminium, to UPVC. This leads to many different types of window seals.
This article will provide guidance on replacing seals for standard sliding windows.
Did you know window seals need replacing every 5 years?
Taking a sample from the current seals is advisable to accurately measure and determine the correct type to order. It is important to wear a mask during the removal of seals as dust can become airborne. Please also follow all safety procedures required.
Removing the sliding window may be necessary to access the middle frame/window seal. If you have the physical ability, simply grasp both sides of the sliding window frame, lift it up gently, and move the bottom of the window away from the frame to remove it. Lower the sliding window onto a towel or drop sheet.
Once you have determined the required seal, you then must prep the area for applying the new internal seal.
Firstly, remove existing seal, either by sliding the seal out of its position or using a small screwdriver and pliers, lift and remove the old seal. Wear a dust mask as old seals can become dusty and powdery.
